On the morning of Friday 15th August, Newent Town Council held a commemorative event to mark the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day and the end of the Second World War.
The occasion began with a flag-raising ceremony at the town’s flagpole, where the Mayor of Newent offered words of welcome, followed by a speech from a Deputy Lieutenant of the Gloucestershire Lieutenancy. Representatives from many community organisations joined members of the public in attendance.
The civic group and residents then processed to Newent War Memorial, where the Chair of the Newent & District Royal British Legion delivered a speech, and the Benefice Curate led prayers. At 11:00, a two-minute silence was observed, bringing the formal proceedings to a close.
